Chalaka Photography

The first haircut. Three years old, and everyone is holding scissors.

A chalaka, a first haircut

A three-year-old will not stand still, and there is no point asking. Try to stage a chalaka and you get a crying child and photographs that look like a punishment. I shoot as it happens — he moves, I move.

My favourite part is when every uncle and grandmother takes a turn with the scissors. The child has no idea why everyone is laughing, and that is exactly what makes the picture.

Many families hold the chalaka at the Kotel or at Meron. I come wherever you have chosen, in Jerusalem and anywhere in the country.
