Tefillin Photography
Early morning, quiet, and he does it alone for the first time.
Laying tefillin is not a large event and does not need to be. It is early, quiet, and usually in the family synagogue or at the Kotel. I photograph it without flash and without interrupting — it is a synagogue during prayer, not a set.
Most of the pictures here are details: the strap on his arm, his father showing him how, his grandfather watching from the side and saying nothing. These moments do not repeat, and you cannot ask for them again.
Many families connect this to the bar mitzvah later that week. Both can be photographed.
